Alzheimer's: Why losing sense of smell may be early sign of disease

A new study has found that carriers of the APOE ε4 gene, who are at higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, may lose their ability to identify odors earlier than those who do not carry the gene variant. The researchers found that a decrease in movement speed could be observed several years before a person is diagnosed with Parkinson’s. The accelerometer data outperformed other models based on medical symptoms, genetics, lifestyle, or blood biochemistry data and could potentially be incorporated into clinical practice in the future. Donanemab for Alzheimer's: New treatment slows early cognitive decline

While treatments can help manage Alzheimer’s symptoms, there is no cure yet. Now, a third disease-modifying treatment that clears amyloid plaques from the brain has shown positive results in a phase 3 trial. Donanemab, a monoclonal antibody, slowed cognitive decline by 35% in people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s but was less effective in those with more advanced Alzheimer’s. Dementia affects more than 55 million people worldwide, and up to 70% of those people have Alzheimer’s disease, characterized by the buildup of two proteins, amyloid and tau .
